Remembering Dates?

Anniversaries (should probably) hold a special place in our hearts. They signify the passing of another year, filled with memories, challenges, and love. Remembering anniversary dates is not just about marking the calendar; it's a tribute to the commitment and dedication that people have shared throughout their journey. (Yeah . . . that totally does not sound like me.)

In today’s fast-paced world where time flies by, it's easy to overlook important dates. However, keeping anniversary dates, or most dates, alive in my heart and mind is easier said than done. It isn’t that I don’t care, because I do. It isn’t that I don’t want to remember, because I am aware the “days” are approaching. It’s trying to hit the nail on the head that eludes me. So I am off a day, or two (or three). At least I remembered the event happening at some point in the past, right? All I am saying is, I was there and I remember.

I remember the fun. I remember the laughs, the smiles, the oopsies and the faces of people I care about. Sometimes, I remember the tears and the sadness when the “anniversary date” was one that I would rather forget. I remember all the important events in my life. I remember most of the little ones too. The little ones are especially meaningful with the passing of time and the loss of people I love.

For me, it isn’t about getting the date just right. It is about treasuring the feelings in those moments with those who were around me. So go ahead and wish me a Happy Anniversary or birthday a day or two early or even a few days late. And when you do, know that I am in no way judging you. I am just happy you remembered me at all!

And for those of you who would still like to do things proper and “on the day”, perhaps these tips can help:

1. Marking the Calendar: The simplest way to remember anniversary dates is by marking the calendar. Whether it's a paper calendar on the wall, a digital calendar on your phone, or a shared calendar app, setting a reminder ensures that you won't forget this special day.

2. Sentimental Reminders: Celebrating love and milestones can have sentimental triggers. Maybe it's the scents of your wedding flowers, the taste of your cake, or a special song that reminds you of that magical day. These sentimental reminders can help you remember and reconnect with the emotions and joy you shared.

3. Creating Traditions: Establishing traditions around anniversary dates can make it easier to remember and add an extra layer of excitement. It could be as simple as having dinner at your favorite restaurant or taking a trip to the place where you shared a special moment with someone. These traditions build a sense of anticipation and make the day more memorable.

4. Creating a Ritual: Rituals are powerful tools for remembrance. They help us honor and acknowledge the significance of the occasion. Whether it's writing heartfelt letters to others, planting a tree in remembrance, or lighting a special candle and thinking about a loved one, there are many ways to celebrate anniversaries.

Remembering special dates is more than just adding another event to our busy schedules. It is an act of love, a testament to the bond we share, and a way to celebrate the milestones we have had together. By incorporating these practices into our lives, we can ensure these special dates, and the people we love, are never forgotten no matter what the date is.

Love and Light,

Susan
